Children's HOPE Club
Healing Opportunities through Purposeful Engagement

Children’s HOPE Club is an after-school expressive arts program that offers social support, opportunities for education, and expressive arts interventions to promote resiliency and cultural pride in Rwandan youth.

A HISTORY OF TRAUMA

During the 1994 genocide perpetrated against the Tutsi, children witnessed deaths of family members, spent time in hiding, were threatened for their lives, and were orphaned. Children born in the aftermath of genocide are susceptible to intergenerational trauma.

DEMONSTRATING RESILIENCE

Rwandans have demonstrated incredible resiliency in the wake of the 1994 genocide. Protective factors that have been identified in the research include perseverance, self-esteem, self-confidence, family unity, good parenting, and collective support.

OUR HOPE FOR RWANDA

Through our intervention model, teachers learn to recognize, assess, and effectively intervene with traumatized children. Our goal is to empower the community to transform intergenerational trauma into intergenerational resiliency.
